The plan

Weeks 1–3

Let it settle

Stop close shaving; trimmer only.

Hairs long enough cannot curl back into the skin.

Morning

  1. Gentle cleanse (or water rinse)

Lukewarm water; a 5-cent-coin amount of fragrance-free, soap-free cleanser; massage 30–60 seconds with fingertips; rinse; pat dry — never rub.

Why: Removes overnight oil and sweat without stripping the barrier lipids that keep water in.

AAD: Tips to relieve dry skin

  2. Fragrance-free moisturiser

Apply within 3 minutes of patting dry, while skin is slightly damp: a 10-cent-coin amount for face and neck, pressed in, not rubbed hard.

Why: Humectants pull water into the outer layer; occlusives and ceramides seal it in, reducing transepidermal water loss.

    Cochrane: Emollients for eczema

  3. Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ (tinted with iron oxides if you have dark marks)

Two-finger rule: squeeze a line along your index and middle fingers for face and neck. Apply as the last skincare step, 15 minutes before going out. Reapply every 2 hours outdoors or after sweating.

Leave on: 15 min before sun

Why: UVA, UVB and visible light all switch on pigment cells; tinted iron-oxide formulas also block visible light, which matters most in darker skin.

Evening

  1. Evening cleanse

If you wore sunscreen or makeup, cleanse twice (first pass loosens, second cleans). 60 seconds total per pass, lukewarm water, pat dry.

Why: Sunscreen and makeup left overnight can clog pores; a thorough but gentle cleanse prepares skin for treatments.

    AAD: Acne skin-care tips

  2. Benzoyl peroxide wash (2.5–5%)

Morning: lather on damp skin over acne areas, leave 1–2 minutes ("short contact"), rinse well. White towels/pillowcases — it bleaches fabric.

    Leave on: leave 1–2 min

Why: Kills acne bacteria without causing antibiotic resistance; short contact gives benefit with less irritation.

    AAD: Acne treatment

Habits

  1. Guarded trimmer

Leave 0.5–1 mm; trim with the grain; never stretch skin.

Why: Avoids the sharp, short hair tip that re-enters skin.

    DermNet: Pseudofolliculitis barbae

  2. Lift, never pluck

If a hair loop is visible, lift the tip with a clean needle-free tool (sterile tweezers held flat) — do not pull out.

    Why: Plucking makes ingrowth deeper.

Food

  1. Hydration

Water with each meal and whenever thirsty; more in heat and harmattan.

Why: Supports overall health; skin hydration is mostly about the barrier, so pair water with moisturiser.

Weeks 4–8

Smart shaving

If you must shave: single blade, with the grain, prepped skin.

Technique reduces ingrowth.

  2. Azelaic acid (10–20% product) — dark marks & acne

After cleansing, wait until skin is fully dry (about 10 minutes). Apply a pea-size amount, dotted on forehead, cheeks and chin, then spread thinly. Start every other night for 2 weeks, then nightly if no irritation. Moisturiser on top after 5 minutes.

Leave on: 10 min on dry skin

Why: Azelaic acid reduces acne bacteria and inflammation and calms overactive pigment cells; trials show benefit for acne and melasma, and it suits darker skin.

    NICE NG198: Acne vulgaris

  3. Fragrance-free moisturiser

Apply within 3 minutes of patting dry, while skin is slightly damp: a 10-cent-coin amount for face and neck, pressed in, not rubbed hard.

Shave days (max 2–3/week)

  1. Shave routine

Warm shower or warm cloth 2 min; fragrance-free gel; single-blade razor; short strokes with the grain; rinse blade each stroke; cool rinse; fragrance-free moisturiser. No alcohol aftershave.

Why: A blunter, less close cut prevents hairs retracting below the skin.

    DermNet: Pseudofolliculitis barbae

Habits

  1. Clean tools

Replace blades weekly; disinfect clipper heads; never share.

Why: Prevents folliculitis and spreading infection.

  2. Weekly progress photo

Same place, same daylight by a window, no filter, no makeup; front, left and right.

Why: Change is slow; consistent photos show progress memory cannot.
