The plan

Weeks 1–4

Handle gently

Wet detangling, moisture-seal, satin at night.

Breakage, not slow growth, is why coily hair seems stuck at one length.

Morning

  1. Moisture refresh (every 2–3 days)

Mist lengths lightly with water or water-based leave-in, then seal ends with a pea-size amount of cream/oil per section.

Why: Water hydrates; a seal slows its escape from the raised cuticle.

Evening

  1. Protect for sleep

Loose twists or pineapple, satin bonnet.

    Why: Reduces friction and tangling.

    AAD: Tips for healthy hair

Wash day

  1. Wash day (weekly or fortnightly)

Section into 4–8. Conditioner pre-detangle 15 min. Shampoo scalp with fingertips (not nails). Condition, detangle from ends upwards with fingers or wide-tooth comb. Leave-in, seal, low-tension style.

Why: Cleansing the scalp and conditioning lengths in sections minimises force on hair.

    AAD: Hair care

Habits

  1. Heat pause

No flat iron/blow-dry on high for 4 weeks; if needed, lowest setting with heat protectant.

Why: Heat weakens the hair protein and cuticle.

    AAD: Tips for healthy hair

Food

  1. Protein at each meal

Beans, eggs, fish, meat or groundnuts.

Why: Hair is protein; severe dietary lack causes shedding.

Weeks 5–12

Retain & trim

Trim splits, deep condition, protective styles kept loose.

Removing split ends stops them travelling up the strand.

Morning

  1. Moisture refresh

    As before.

    Why: Keeps hair flexible.

Evening

  1. Protect for sleep

    As before.

    Why: Less friction.

Wash day + deep condition

  1. Deep condition

After shampoo, deep conditioner 15–30 min with gentle warmth (warm towel). Rinse lukewarm.

Why: Conditioners smooth the cuticle and reduce combing force.

    AAD: Hair care

Habits

  1. Trim at week 6 and 12

Remove only split ends (often 0.5–1 cm), with sharp hair scissors.

Why: Keeps ends strong; does not change growth rate.

    AAD: Tips for healthy hair

  2. Weekly progress photo

Same place, same daylight by a window, no filter, no makeup; front, left and right.

Why: Change is slow; consistent photos show progress memory cannot.

    AAD: Fade dark spots

Food

  1. Hydration

Water with each meal and whenever thirsty; more in heat and harmattan.

Why: Supports overall health; skin hydration is mostly about the barrier, so pair water with moisturiser.

AAD: Tips to relieve dry skin
