The plan
Weeks 1–4
Stop the pull
Remove tension, glue and heat at the hairline.
Traction alopecia is reversible early; continuing tension scars follicles.
Morning
Low-tension style check
Choose loose twists, low buns or an unglued wig on a satin cap. Test: no pain, no bumps, you can move your scalp freely.
Why: Removing tension is the single most important treatment.
Evening
Satin protection
Satin bonnet or pillowcase; edges lie flat — no tight scarves.
Why: Reduces friction breakage at the fragile hairline.
Habits
Book a doctor/dermatologist review
Ask about scarring, CCCA and whether minoxidil or anti-inflammatory treatment suits you.
Why: Early treatment gives the best chance of regrowth.
Baseline hairline photos
Front, left temple, right temple; hair pulled back loosely; same light.
Why: Regrowth is slow and subtle.
Food
Protein & iron
Beans, fish, eggs, leafy greens daily.
Why: Iron deficiency and low protein can worsen shedding; a doctor can test iron.
Weeks 5–10
Support
Gentle care; medical treatment only if advised.
Follicles need months without tension to restart.
Morning
Edge moisture (light)
A few drops of light leave-in on the hairline; no brushing or "laying" edges with gel.
Why: Dry, brittle edge hairs snap.
Evening
Minoxidil — ONLY if a doctor/pharmacist advised it
Follow their instructions exactly; wash hands after; not in pregnancy.
Why: Minoxidil prolongs the growth phase; benefits need months of continued use.
Habits
Weekly progress photo
Same place, same daylight by a window, no filter, no makeup; front, left and right.
Why: Change is slow; consistent photos show progress memory cannot.
Gentle scalp massage
4 minutes with fingertips, light pressure, no pulling.
Why: Comfortable and may help; never rub hard on fragile areas.
Food
Hydration
Water with each meal and whenever thirsty; more in heat and harmattan.
Why: Supports overall health; skin hydration is mostly about the barrier, so pair water with moisturiser.
Weeks 11–16
Regrow & protect
Keep styles loose for good.
Regrowth is fragile; returning to tight styles restarts the damage.
Morning
Style rotation
Alternate styles every 2–4 weeks; give edges free days.
Why: Varying stress points protects the hairline.
Evening
Satin & loose
As before.
Why: Ongoing protection.
Habits
Weekly progress photo

Why: Change is slow; consistent photos show progress memory cannot.
Doctor follow-up if no change by week 12
Bring your photos.
Why: May need different treatment.

Milestones
Your weekly check-in
Ask yourself these once a week. If an answer worries you, stop and see a doctor or pharmacist.
Stop and see a doctor if
- Smooth, shiny skin where hair was (possible scarring) — see a doctor
- Scalp pain, pus or scaling
- Hair loss spreading to the crown (possible CCCA)
- Palpitations, dizziness or facial hair growth on minoxidil — stop and see a doctor
