The plan

Weeks 1–4

Spa cycle

Week 1 cleanse & calm · Week 2 hydrate · Week 3 gentle polish · Week 4 restore.

Gentle, regular care beats aggressive monthly treatments; friction and strong scrubs cause dark marks.

Morning

  1. Gentle cleanse (or water rinse)

Lukewarm water; a 5-cent-coin amount of fragrance-free, soap-free cleanser; massage 30–60 seconds with fingertips; rinse; pat dry — never rub.

Why: Removes overnight oil and sweat without stripping the barrier lipids that keep water in.

AAD: Tips to relieve dry skin

  2. Fragrance-free moisturiser

Apply within 3 minutes of patting dry, while skin is slightly damp: a 10-cent-coin amount for face and neck, pressed in, not rubbed hard.

Why: Humectants pull water into the outer layer; occlusives and ceramides seal it in, reducing transepidermal water loss.

    Cochrane: Emollients for eczema

  3. Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ (tinted with iron oxides if you have dark marks)

Two-finger rule: squeeze a line along your index and middle fingers for face and neck. Apply as the last skincare step, 15 minutes before going out. Reapply every 2 hours outdoors or after sweating.

Leave on: 15 min before sun

Why: UVA, UVB and visible light all switch on pigment cells; tinted iron-oxide formulas also block visible light, which matters most in darker skin.

Evening

  1. Evening cleanse

If you wore sunscreen or makeup, cleanse twice (first pass loosens, second cleans). 60 seconds total per pass, lukewarm water, pat dry.

Why: Sunscreen and makeup left overnight can clog pores; a thorough but gentle cleanse prepares skin for treatments.

    AAD: Acne skin-care tips

Spa evening (20 minutes)

  1. 1. Double cleanse

Fragrance-free cleansing balm or oil massaged 60 s on dry skin, emulsify with water, then a gentle cleanser.

Why: Lifts sunscreen and sebum without scrubbing.

    AAD: Acne skin-care tips

  2. 2. Warm cloth

Warm (not hot) clean cloth pressed 3 × 30 s.

Why: Softens the surface; heat above comfortable can flush and irritate.

  3. 3. Mask of the week

Wk1 plain clay 8–10 min (oily) or oat/colloidal-oatmeal mask (dry/sensitive); Wk2 thick moisturiser as an overnight mask; Wk3 a gentle lactic-acid or PHA product 1×; Wk4 ceramide cream mask.

Why: Each week targets a different need without stacking irritants.

AAD: Tips to relieve dry skin

  4. 4. Massage & seal

Moisturiser with light upward strokes for 2 minutes; petrolatum on lips.

Why: Massage is relaxing; sealing keeps water in overnight.

Habits

  1. Fresh pillowcase

Change or turn your pillowcase every 2–3 days; satin or silk if you can.

Why: Reduces oil, product and bacteria on the skin and friction on hair.

    AAD: Acne skin-care tips

  2. Sleep 7–9 hours

Screens off 30 minutes before bed; same bedtime daily.

Why: Sleep loss raises stress hormones that worsen acne, eczema and dull skin.

    AAD: Acne skin-care tips

  3. Patch test any new product

Apply a pea-size amount behind the ear or inner arm twice daily for 5–7 days before using on the face.

Why: Allergic reactions can take 48–72 hours to appear; testing a small area first prevents a full-face reaction.

Food

  1. Hydration

Water with each meal and whenever thirsty; more in heat and harmattan.

Why: Supports overall health; skin hydration is mostly about the barrier, so pair water with moisturiser.
