The plan

Weeks 1–3

Strip back

Stop all actives, scrubs and fragrance. Three products only.

The barrier rebuilds lipids over weeks when irritants are removed.

Morning

  1. Water rinse or gentle cleanser

Lukewarm water only if skin is very reactive.

    Why: Less surfactant contact.

AAD: Tips to relieve dry skin

  2. Fragrance-free moisturiser

Apply within 3 minutes of patting dry, while skin is slightly damp: a 10-cent-coin amount for face and neck, pressed in, not rubbed hard.

Why: Humectants pull water into the outer layer; occlusives and ceramides seal it in, reducing transepidermal water loss.

    Cochrane: Emollients for eczema

  3. Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ (tinted with iron oxides if you have dark marks)

Two-finger rule: squeeze a line along your index and middle fingers for face and neck. Apply as the last skincare step, 15 minutes before going out. Reapply every 2 hours outdoors or after sweating.

Leave on: 15 min before sun

Why: UVA, UVB and visible light all switch on pigment cells; tinted iron-oxide formulas also block visible light, which matters most in darker skin.

Evening

  1. Gentle cleanse (only if SPF/makeup worn)

    Soap-free cleanser, 30 seconds.

    Why: Minimal contact.

  2. Ceramide/petrolatum moisturiser — generous

A 20-cent-coin amount; petrolatum on dry patches.

Why: Replaces barrier lipids, cuts water loss.

    Cochrane: Emollients for eczema

Habits

  1. Pause actives

No acids, retinoids, scrubs, toners, essential oils.

Why: Each is a potential irritant on a damaged barrier.

AAD: Tips to relieve dry skin

  2. Short lukewarm showers

    5–10 minutes.

    Why: Hot water strips lipids.

Food

  1. Hydration

Water with each meal and whenever thirsty; more in heat and harmattan.

Why: Supports overall health; skin hydration is mostly about the barrier, so pair water with moisturiser.

Weeks 4–6

Rebuild tolerance

If calm for 7 days, patch-test one gentle active (niacinamide).

Reintroduce one at a time to identify triggers.

Morning

  1. Gentle cleanse (or water rinse)

Lukewarm water; a 5-cent-coin amount of fragrance-free, soap-free cleanser; massage 30–60 seconds with fingertips; rinse; pat dry — never rub.

Why: Removes overnight oil and sweat without stripping the barrier lipids that keep water in.

Evening

  1. Evening cleanse

If you wore sunscreen or makeup, cleanse twice (first pass loosens, second cleans). 60 seconds total per pass, lukewarm water, pat dry.

Why: Sunscreen and makeup left overnight can clog pores; a thorough but gentle cleanse prepares skin for treatments.

    AAD: Acne skin-care tips

Habits

  1. Patch test any new product

Apply a pea-size amount behind the ear or inner arm twice daily for 5–7 days before using on the face.

Why: Allergic reactions can take 48–72 hours to appear; testing a small area first prevents a full-face reaction.

    DermNet: Patch tests

  2. Weekly progress photo

Same place, same daylight by a window, no filter, no makeup; front, left and right.

Why: Change is slow; consistent photos show progress memory cannot.

    AAD: Fade dark spots

Food

  1. Hydration

Water with each meal and whenever thirsty; more in heat and harmattan.

Why: Supports overall health; skin hydration is mostly about the barrier, so pair water with moisturiser.
