Choosing it for deep skin
- White "HD", translucent and banana powders can look white or grey in flash photos (flashback). Test with your phone flash.
- Choose a tinted powder in your shade or a deep "universal" shade.
- Skip pink, blue or lilac "brightening" powders. Heavy white baking under the eyes looks ashy.
- Choose "talc-free" or a talc powder from a registered brand; talc must be asbestos-free.
How to apply
- Let cream products settleWait a minute after foundation and concealer.
- Load, then tap offLoad a clean puff or brush, then tap off the extra.
- Press, do not sweepPress powder into the forehead, nose, chin and under the eyes.
- Do a flash testTake a phone photo with flash. White patches mean flashback: dust off or use a deeper shade.
- Go light on dry areasSkip the cheeks if they are dry, especially in harmattan.
How long to wear it
- Powder holds most of the day. At midday, blot oil with blotting paper before adding more.
- Too many layers look cakey and grey. Less is better on deep skin.
- Remove it every night with your makeup.
Don’t use it if
- On broken, weeping or very flaky skin; powder clings and irritates.
- Never shake loose powder near a baby; babies can breathe it in.
- If it has caused itching or a rash before.
Safety and the evidence
Flashback comes from white, light-scattering particles such as silica.
Evidence D — makeup-artist consensus; light-scattering mechanism
Cosmetic talc must be asbestos-free. In the US, a proposed standard asbestos test was withdrawn in November 2025, so no standard test is required yet.
Evidence D — regulator status · FDA — Talc in cosmetics
Natural mica can carry child-labour risk; synthetic fluorphlogopite avoids it. This is an ethics note, not a safety one.
Evidence C — NGO report · SOMO 2018 — global mica mining
Evidence grades: A systematic reviews or several trials; B at least one trial or consistent controlled studies; C observational studies, surveys or case reports; D expert opinion.
Keep it clean
- Wash your puff or brush at least weekly; puffs collect skin oil and germs.
- Close the lid in dusty harmattan weather. Do not share puffs.
- Throw it away if it hardens, smells odd or was dropped and shattered.
Important
See a doctor if
- See a doctor or pharmacist for a rash or acne flare that does not settle after stopping.
- See a dermatologist if your skin stays very dry and flaky despite moisturiser.
Emergency in Nigeria: call 112 or go to the nearest hospital.
